Maya Shenfeld is a Jerusalem born Berlin-based composer and musician. In her practice, Shenfeld explores the intersection between modes of musical production used in popular, electronic, and experimental music. Her debut solo album In Free Fall, encompassing a series of electroacoustic pieces for analogue synths, brass, electric guitar, and a youth choir, was released on the UK/US label Thrill Jockey on the 28th of January 2022. The album received multiple positive reviews including contemporary album of the month on The Guardian, single release on FACT magazine, and a feature on the Berliner Tagesspiegel.

Shenfeld’s work encompasses electro-acoustic compositions, site-specific sound installations, ensemble performances, music for film and TV, as well as solo live electronic sets. Since her graduation from the UdK Berlin (2016), Shenfeld has been presenting commissioned work internationally, including performances at Kiezsalon, United We Stream (Berlin), Ableton’s One Thing series, Frequenz Festival (Kiel), Loop Festival (LA & Berlin), Torstraßenfestival (Berlin), Jewish Museum, NS Dokuzentrum (Munich), Centrala Art Gallery (Birmingham, UK), North-Western University (Chicago), and others. Under the artist name, Rouge Fou shenfeld produces music for film and TV. Her most recent project Cinematic Minimalism was commissioned by EMI’s production music library and featured internationally on documentaries, drama, and radio.

Maya Shenfeld is a graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin, where she completed an MA in classical guitar and contemporary music composition. She produced in the framework of multiple residencies, among them Amplify Berlin (mentored by Caterina Barbieri), and EMS Stockholm. In May 2019 Shenfeld produced and led a performance of Julius Eastman’s Gay Guerrilla by an ensemble of 16 women playing electric guitar and bass for the opening event of Schinkel Pavillon e.V’s Disappearing Berlin.
Shenfeld is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships including Musik Fonds, Goethe Institute, GEMA scholarship, the America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship, the DAAD scholarship, a special grant from the University of the Arts Berlin.
